Printer's proofs were a pre-digital way of checking the print set up was correct in terms of repro and in the case of spot colours, that the inks were correct, the fit was spot on and that the finished thing would look how we imagined it to look.

A lot of what we did experimenting with overprints etc would only ever be seen when printed so we used the proofs to make sure we were getting what we thought we were going to get (or if not, that it was, at least, better than we imagined.) So, at the time, proofs were like demos… what we wanted was the finished thing. 

We kept the proofs purely for future reference not as cherished prints in themselves. Now ‘everything's computers’ and most proofing is done digitally, these printed proofs have a charm that speaks of the process locked in the time they were run. Because the proofs were typically run-off in ones and twos they have acquired an inherent rarity.

Some people like to see the colour bars / printers marks / comments / uncut sheets which amplify the physicality of the design. If you do then these ‘demos' are for you. These are being made available as part of our unarchiving process, better they pimp up your walls than line the plan chests at TDRHQ. Each of them is genuinely rare — not just something we have a limited number of left.
