DR Sokka Pies 'r' Us - T-Shirt
Dawn of The Premier League. Towards the end of the season and on top form we’d been a couple of wins away from the title so football fever was in full swing at TDR™ when Arkwright approached us to do a non-aligned fan-based T-shirt collection following up on the PWEI and Orb replica football shirts we’d done with them.
These were the baggy days of ubiquitous St Etienne emerald green replica shirts with French flag trim and TDR™’s Hanna Barbarism toon power — all vectors, flat colour and Freehand.
DR Sokka was a six-a-side series of UK-Kawaii-designs based on early-90s terrace chatter cliches and obsessions.
The numbers on each of the shirts were designed to be printed on the back of the shirt like squad number but Arkwright didn’t want to fork out for two sided printing and somehow the numbers ended up on the front.
Maybe it’s a sign of the times but ‘Pies ‘R’ Us’ was the real favourite on the DR Sokka menu. To the uninitiated there was a ritual attached to a lot of fans match day routine. For us it was 3 pints, no more no less, in the Park Hotel followed by a pie (injected) with Hendos and a two-hander chip butty ‘to soak it up’ from, and on, The Kop. Part of the ritual was the correct folding of the used Pie Foil and the placing of it in a specified back pocket.
Obviously this wasn’t unique to us but each fan clan had their own rituals. If Wednesday lost, clearly someone had not followed protocol and the loss was deemed to be their fault. Some (most) seasons there were obviously a lot of people not folding their foil correctly!
Pies ‘R’ Us was a product of a time when pop culture was catching up with TDR™’s Piracy on The Hi-Tech.
